member of the board of directors and steering of the curatorial team
I was asked to join the board in 2016. I got elected by the members of the 'club' and started work in January 2017. Very soon I was asked to lead the curatorial team which I was doing until I announced to be on strike in January 2018.
I am the 2nd woman on the board. There are about 60 volunteers working in the archive, the library, the café, the shop and the exhibition space. Around 10 people in the back office are employed on a full- or part-time contract basis. The board of directors has 8 members and also works on a voluntarily basis.
I see my role in helping to bridge the existing gaps- **generations and genders - from the founding 'mothers' to the young queer scene- revealing and healing some old wounds especially for the female* identified people**structures
- from a dominant 'cis, male, gay, middle-class' structure and output to a significant visibility of perspectives from women*, lesbians, trans*, inter, POC - internal (un-) learning processes**forms- from former flatware curating style to a more contemporary appearance, between social hub, history museum and art space - queering the queer institution
current projects in my initiative and (co-) responsibility:
-project management of the museums' first theme year for 2018: "Year of the Women*" (concept, funding applications, planning, curating) (with Birgit Bosold)
-new Corporate Design (with Goys & Birls Amsterdam)
-shifting focus towards more strategic planning and artistic direction in the curatorial group
Examples of my work will follow but here is one of the first ones:
'Conversion Slot'
establishing a new format despite the already fully booked museum's yearly planning:
a) attract a new, young and international queer crowd that has not been to the museum
b) making space for female* voices
--> making it bigger and more sexy: a 2-nighter in the big exhibition space instead of the small café
during change of exhibitions
